RYA Level 1: Start Sailing

A weekend introductory course to learn the basics of sailing & boat control, following the RYA Level 1: Start Sailing Syllabus.

No previous experience is required for this course. This course is completed in singlehanders.

The course content includes:

Wind awareness

Parts of rigging and sail controls

Launch and recovery

Sailing upwind, downwind and across the wind

Controlling boat speed

Tacking and gybing

Some useful knots

Basic rights of way

Summoning help

Clothing and buoyancy

Capsize recovery


Following successful completion of the course, participants will be able to sail in light winds under supervision. The next step from here is the RYA Level 2: Basic Skills course to build on the basics and learn additional useful skills, or you can come and practice and consolidate what you have learned at our ‘Practice Sailing’ sessions.

Wetsuits and buoyancy aids are provided. Participants should bring a towel, swimwear and shoes that can get wet (old trainers are fine).

Suitable for persons aged 14 upwards. Anyone under 16 may prefer to learn to sail in one of our holiday week sailing courses, following the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme.
