RYA Start Windsurfing

Date: 3rd - 4th June 2017 Time: 09:30 - 17:30

Take the first step towards experiencing the thrills and spills of sailing a windsurf board. This course teaches the introductory skills to get to a level where you’re able to get out on your own.

The initial stages of learning board balance and how to use the sail does mean the first part of the course tends to be quite wet! But it’s all worth it once you’re able to get the board to go where you want it to. The course runs over two long mornings on a weekend, with a short break to finish in time for a late lunch.

There are no pre-requisites for this course. If you would like a taste of windsurfing before committing to the full course you could try a ‘Discover Windsurfing’ session.

The course content includes:

Rigging, de-rigging and storage of kit

Carrying and launching the board and rig

Getting on the board and lifting the rig

Establishing the secure position

Controlling power in the rig and stopping

Steering on the move and on the spot

Sailing upwind

Tacking and gybing

Self rescue and attracting attention

Basic rights of way

Choosing a sailing venue and finding safe areas

Following successful completion of the course, participants should be able to sail a board and get themselves back to where they started, including sailing upwind and downwind, in light to medium winds. The RYA Start Windsurfing is the minimum level required for hiring windsurfing kit.
